Cheerleading
~Tryout Clinic will be August 24-27 at Northgate MS from 2:30-4:30 with the team being announced by take-home letter on Thursday the 27th. Parent pick up and drop off is needed on Monday, Aug 24, due to NO BUSES. A ride home at 4:30 will be needed the first day of school, Tuesday, Aug. 25. After school buses will become available the second day of school (Aug 26).
~Athletes will need a physical before they are able to participate in tryouts. (This is a MSHSAA rule). Athletes can get one from their own doctor or at any Minute Clinic. You will not be able to practice or try out without one. Physicals are good for 2 years.
~While practicing and performing, you will NOT be able to wear any jewelry or have long fingernails. All piercings must be taken out. (This is a MSHAA safety rule.)
~Each athlete will have to actively participate in 14 practices before they will be allowed to cheer at an event. This goes for the football and basketball season. (This is a MSHSAA rule).
~Practice will be held after school (2:15-4:45) and athletes will go home on the after-school bus. Starting at 4:00, we will have academic practice. This gives the athletes dedicated time to work on schoolwork. If needed, the athlete may be picked up at this time.
~Athletes will be expected to be at all practices and games. Missing practices or games due to poor grades, behavior, absences, etc. will result in probation and/or removal from the team. Missing 3 practices will put the athlete on probation. Missing 6 practices will remove the athlete from the team.
~If you will not be able to attend practice or a game, a coach needs to know BEFORE the event. This is a commitment; athletes are expected to be at all events. If you do not communicate before, it will result in a DOUBLE missed practice. One of the biggest frustrations we have encountered is practicing a stunt group all week just to have someone not show at a game. We can make necessary changes when we know ahead of time. Too many missed practices/games will result in not being able to cheer at a game, or removal from the team.
~Being at school is a priority. You are a student athlete; this means that you are a STUDENT first. If academics, attendance, or behavior starts to decline, you will have a meeting with the coaches, and any other necessary personnel. Missing practices or performances due to poor grades, behavior, absences, etc. will result in removal from the team.
~According to MSHSAA, if you have OSS or miss more than half the school day, the day of a game or practice, you cannot participate.
~Fall Season: Football-August-October: We cheer 2 games at NKCHS, 1 at OPHS and 3 at Northgate, for a total of 6 games (see calendar). Games will start at either 4:00 or 5:00pm. The bus will take you to the games at NKCHS and OPHS, but a ride home is your responsibility. We will cheer for A team and B team games those nights. We hope to be done by 7:00-7:30 each night.
~Rides home from ALL football games are your responsibility. Rides need to be arranged ahead of time. If you are riding home from the game with a friend or teammate, you must have a note from YOUR parent BEFORE the game starts saying you have their permission to leave with another adult.
~There is a $50 participation fee/there is no fee for free and reduced lunch. All other team costs will be your responsibility (white shoes, white socks, black leggings, etc.).
~ A full cheerleading uniform (shell and skirt), jacket, bow, bag, and poms will be provided for games. If the equipment (uniform, jacket, poms, bow, bag, etc.) is damaged, lost, not turned in in the condition it was in when given out, the responsibility of paying will be on the athlete.
You are an extension of Northgate. As a cheerleader, you are held to a higher standard; you need to lead at school and in your community.
